Poi Supper & Kama‘āina Sunday

‘Iolani Palace stands as one of the most significant landmarks of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. Commissioned by King Kalākaua, it was intentionally built to reflect Hawai‘i’s status as a modern, independent, and strategically positioned nation within the global community. Following the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, the Palace’s role changed dramatically. It served
successively as the capitol for the Provisional Government, the Republic of Hawai‘i, the Territory of Hawai‘i, and eventually the State of Hawai‘i.

Over time, the building fell into serious disrepair and faced the threat of demolition. In the 1970s, a dedicated group of Native Hawaiian women led the effort to preserve and restore the Palace to its original grandeur. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark and a major cultural and educational destination, offering visitors a window into Hawai‘i’s royal past.

For more than 20 years, HNC has supported ‘Iolani Palace. HNC has continued its commitment through educational and cultural programs, exhibits, and financial support, helping Native Hawaiians, local residents, and visitors experience the Palace’s unique and storied history.

In 2025, HNC participated in the Palace’s Poi Supper, a family-friendly fundraiser celebrating the birthday of Queen Lili‘uokalani. Presented in part by HNC and hosted by the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace, the event featured Hawaiian entertainment, ‘ono food, and a spirit of community. Proceeds supported restoration projects, the care of historic collections, and educational programs that share the story of Hawai‘i’s monarchy with future generations.

In addition to the Poi Supper event, HNC continued to support educational programming, cultural exhibitions, and community engagement initiatives through Kama‘āina Sunday, a free event held on the second Sunday of every month to connect Native Hawaiian communities and Hawai‘i residents with their culture and history
