DETAILS
Written, directed, and produced by Native Hawaiian filmmaker ʻĀina Paikai, Hawaiian Soul is the story of George Helm, a talented Native Hawaiian musician that used his gift of song to become a leader in the movement of protecting land and native rights, in what is now referred to today as the Hawaiian Renaissance. This narrative short film is based on true stories of his life experiences and attempts to capture the key moments where music fueled both his passions of celebrating Hawaiian culture and guarding what’s left of it. The real life story of George Helm ends in tragedy and sacrifice, but what remains is his legacy of aloha ʻāina, a beloved patriotism for country. His actions in the Hawaiian civil rights movement made an everlasting impression on the generations to follow. HNC (DAWSON) made a contribution to help fund the film.
