PKO logo

LOCATION
Kahoʻolawe, Hawaiʻi

PARTNER ORGANIZATION
Kahoʻolawe

IMPACT TYPE
Aloha ʻĀina

DETAILS
From 1941-1994 the island of Kahoʻolawe was commandeered by the Navy for target practice during World War II. In 1976 nine protesters occupied it in an attempt to stop the shelling. One of the original protestors Dr. Noa Emmett Aluli established the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana (PKO) who, in turn, championed a cause that eventually became the “heartbeat of a movement by native Hawaiians seeking self-determination.” The mission of PKO is to perpetuate Aloha ʻĀina throughout our islands through cultural, educational, and spiritual activities that heal and revitalize the cultural and natural resources on Kahoʻolawe.

2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the stopping of the bombing on Kahoʻolawe.
Today HNC and DAWSON continue to support the efforts of the Protect Kahoʻolawe ʻOhana via both financial contributions and in-kind services, including revegetation and invasive species removal on island.
